About altweb.space
The modern digital platforms are efficient, convenient, and deeply centralised. A handful of platforms shapes how we publish content, communicate, and discover information.
Most of the time, this works. But sometimes, it doesn’t. When a service shuts down, it changes its rules, or quietly shifts its priorities, we are reminded of how little room there is to move.
altweb.space exists for that moment.
Alternatives are not always better. Many are smaller, rougher, and less polished. Some will fail. Others will remain niche forever. But the presence of alternatives matters, not because they must replace the mainstream, but because they preserve choice.
This is not anti-monopoly, this is pro-optionality.
The value isn't that alternatives win. The value is in the fact that alternatives exist. Choice is the point. Optionality is a form of resilience.
This project is not an argument against popular platforms. It is an argument for awareness. For knowing what else exists. This project shows the exit signs that points to the door. If you can see the exit, you are not trapped. Even if you never leave, it is always better to know that you can.
altweb.space is a curated directory of big popular platforms and their alternatives, which are independent projects, open systems, federated networks, and small experiments that expand the digital platform landscape.
Some are better, most are probably worse, but all are options.
